The problem: Water chestnut is an invasive aquatic plant that is detrimental to the river in three ways:
- Ecological: Water chestnuts out-compete beneficial native plants, decrease biodiversity, reduce water quality, decompose slowly and reduce oxygenm and generate poor conditions for fish
- Recreational: Water chestnuts reduce the aesthetic quality of the river, tangle around outboard motors, obstruct access to boat ramps and lanes, snag fishing lines, and reduce visibility in the water.
- Economic: The presence of water chestnuts and other aquatic invasive plants can devalue waterfront property and require substantial funds to manage
