SUMMARY:Mural Painting Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Background\nSince 2011\, Groundwork Somerville’s staff\, Green Team members\, and community volunteers have worked together to transform a parking lot on South Street into an abundant community farm. For two years they have enlisted the help of community artists to enliven the space with murals along some of the walls. This year\, another wall of plain siding will be transformed into a colorful garden space. \nProcess\nMurals are a way communities add color\, vibrancy\, and life to city spaces. The process for creating a mural follows a number of steps: \nSketching and Ideas\nThe artist creates a number of sketches based on ideas and concepts for the mural. For this mural\, we focused on a number of design ideas: diversity\, community connectedness\, youth\, and the vibrancy of the farm. Many of the colors were pulled from photographs from the farm produce. \nCommunity Input\nThe artist chose two final sketches to present to community members at GWS’ Earth Day Celebration. 106 votes were taken by community members to determine the winning design. \nCleaning and Priming\nPart of what makes a mural unique is that it is outside and open to the elements. It is very important to prep murals so that they last and remain vibrant over time. The priming and prep of the wall – cleaning of dirt and debris – is important so that the mural lasts. \nPainting\nThe next steps are the painting of the design. The design is blocked off on a grid and then filled in with color. \nSealing\nThe final step is sealing the whole piece with a waterproof layer to protect from the elements. Normally this is done with spray paint. This will ensure that the mural remains water-proof\, doesn’t peel or fade. \nThe Activity\nVolunteers will help preserve the mural by prepping the wall and priming.\nVolunteers will begin by wiping down the surface of the wall with damp cloths so that the surface of the wall is clean and dry.\nNext\, volunteers will prime the surface with a layer of white paint. Emelia can show an example of how to evenly apply brushstrokes\, but it’s not necessary to be perfect. The paint will dry and the surface will be ready! \nAbout the Artist: \nEmelia Misail is an artist living in Allston and working in Cambridge at Just A Start\, a community development organization around the corner from the South Street Farm. Originally from Pepperell\, MA\, Emelia has been a local artist for several years and completed community projects for the Pepperell Lawrence Library\, Prescott Grange and three local schools. Since moving to Allston\, she has been a part of the City of Boston PaintBox program and has completed large-scale commissions for acrylic and watercolor portraits and landscapes. Her work is inspired by the natural world and rural Massachusetts. \nHer website can be found here:\nhttps://emeliamisail.wixsite.com/emelia-misail

SUMMARY:Secret Scary Movie Screening w/ Strictly Brohibited
DESCRIPTION:Women x Horror: a classic combo! Join Strictly Brohibited at 8pm (doors at 7:30) on Saturday\, October 23 at Groundwork Somerville’s South Street Farm in Union Square for a secret scary screening! \nWhile we can’t reveal the movie’s title\, trust that it’ll be fun\, feminist\, and directed by a non-male filmmaker! This recent thriller combines elements of slasher\, dark comedy\, and magical realism into an allegory about everyday sexism. We’ll also be hosting a short post-film discussion for anyone interested. \nThis outdoor screening is free and open to the public\, but we will be accepting donations for Groundwork Somerville’s future projects and events. Attendees are required to wear masks and observe social distancing. Bench seating is available but attendees may also bring their own chairs or picnic blankets. Outside food and drink is permitted. \nRuntime: 83 minutes\nContent Warning: Depictions of violence against women; some light gore \nRSVP here! \n  \n— \nStrictly Brohibited is a Boston-area screening series and discussion group celebrating the work of non-cis-male filmmakers. We aim to foster a welcoming community for women\, nonbinary\, genderqueer\, and trans movie lovers to talk freely without being interrupted by Film Bros. We hold regular virtual and in-person screenings\, organized through a private Facebook group and Instagram. \nGroundwork Somerville\, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization\, has been making change happen in Somerville\, Massachusetts since 2000. Through community engagement\, environmental and open space improvements\, fresh food access\, youth education\, and employment initiatives\, Groundwork creates the building blocks of a healthy community\, and empowers residents to improve their quality of life. \n  \n
