SUMMARY:White House Kitchen Garden Harvest
DESCRIPTION:Groundwork Somerville will be visiting the White House on Tuesday\, May 28th with five elementary students from the Healey School\, Principal Jill Geiser\, and Susana Hernandez-Morgan from the City of Somerville to harvest the summer crop from the White House Kitchen Garden with Michelle Obama. \nThe five students are members of Groundwork Somerville’s Garden Club at Healey\, and traveled to the White House in April to plant the garden with the First Lady. Groundwork Somerville has partnered with the City and Somerville Public Schools to establish and maintain the Schoolyard Gardens at Healey and every elementary school in Somerville\, in order to offer environmental and nutritional education to students\, and to promote “…environmental\, economic and social well-being…”

DESCRIPTION:Tuesday May 14\, @ 7:30pm the Board of Alderman will be hosting a Public Hearing at City Hall about filling Board of Alderman vacancies. Currently if an Alderman resigns\, she or he simply appoints an interim replacement. Recently\, 140 registered voters in Somerville signed a petition calling for a public hearing about this matter\, forcing the BoA to host this public forum. An order considering a rule change to “make the replacement of members of this Board subject to a time limited community review process when a vacancy occurs mid-term” will be put forward. Please pre-register here:  \nOur four sites and associated activities are: \nSouth Street Farm\, 100 South Street\, Somerville\, MA – Clean up\, brush clearing\, mural prep\, planting \nHealey School Garden\, 5 Meacham Street\, Somerville – Garden and school grounds cleanup\,  replenishing soil and mulch\, some planting and brush removal\, possibly re-staining benches \nBlessing of the Bay Boathouse\, 32 Shore Drive\, Somerville – Weeding native plant gardens and green roof demonstration bed\, fruit tree planting\, clean up\, invasive species removal \nNorthern Strand Community Trail\, Malden\, MA – Clean up and clearing over 3 miles of trail\, including some site prep for future gardens. \n \n
