This workshop is part of our Maple Syrup Project leading up to the Maple Boil Down. \nDate & Location: Saturday\, March 18th\, 10-11:30am at 22 Vinal Ave\, Somerville (The Somerville Growing Center) \nRegistration: Registration is required as we will cap this event at 15 participants. The $15 suggested donation will support Earthwise Aware and costs associated with the Maple Boil Down. Register online here: http://events.constantcontact.com/register/event?llr=9afj9dcab&oeidk=a07ejnztb9r4eba93ac \nPresenter: Claire O’Neill (Earthwise Aware). Claire O’Neill is the founder of Earthwise Aware (EwA) and the director of its Biodiversity & Climate Participatory Science program. This initiative connects the public with its immediate natural systems and empowers communities. SUMMARY:Maple Syrup Boil Down
DESCRIPTION:We are excited to announce the Maple Syrup Boil Down is coming back in full swing for 2023! This wonderful community tradition\, now in its 24th year\, began in 2000 at the Somerville Community Growing Center\, with Groundwork Somerville taking over about a decade later. The two organizations have joined forces to collaborate on this community project in more recent years. Through tapping local maple trees on the Tufts campus\, we are able to spend time outdoors in winter\, enjoy experiential learning\, and connect with seasonal cycles and one of nature’s most beautiful systems! \nYou can purchase t-shirts and tote bags here! \nRead more about the history of the boil down on the Growing Center’s website here!

SUMMARY:Foraging for Local Wild Food: Part I
DESCRIPTION:Do you want to be able to find free food growing in your neighborhood?  Do you want to do so while being safe\, and respectful of nature?  This discussion will help you get started on your foraging journey! \nIn this workshop\, local forager and plant-enthusiast\, Shane Jordan\, will walk us through the basics of foraging and identify commonly-foraged trees and plants. Focus will be on humans relationship to nature\, why foraging is valuable\, a history of foraging through an anti-capitalist perspective\, and foraging as it relates to race & class. We will also examine photos and discuss specific trees and plants in the area that make great foraging material. Stay tuned for part II of this workshop in early fall for a walk around Somerville to identify local plants good for foraging!  \nShane is based in Somerville and has been foraging for over a decade\, but still considers himself a beginner.  He is most interested in that place where economy\, ecology\, philosophy\, history\, science\, and politics overlap.  He spends a lot of time looking at plants and thinking “can I eat that?” \nPart I of this workshop will be held via zoom. Please register online here and you will be sent a zoom link prior to the date. Tickets are sliding scale $0-$15. All proceeds will go toward the construction of our very first community compost-bin at South St. Farm!

SUMMARY:Strictly Brohibited at South Street Farm: TALK TO ME
DESCRIPTION:It’s Strictly Brohibited at South Street Farm! Join us for a monthly screening series of cool movies written and/or directed by non-men. Free and open to the public! \nOur July film is TALK TO ME (2007)\, directed by Kasi Lemmons. This biopic follows Petey Greene (Don Cheadle)\, an activist radio DJ who became an influential figure in the 60s and 70s\, propelled by his ambitious manager Dewey Hughes (Chiwetel Ejiofor). Written by Hughes’ real-life son Michael Genet and filmmaker Rick Famuyiwa (Brown Sugar\, Dope)\, the film documents Greene’s ascension from prison DJ to high-profile talk show host\, and addresses still-relevant topics like racism\, poverty\, and drug abuse in an environment that was often hostile to Black voices. With compelling lead performances\, a killer soul and funk soundtrack\, and an impressive supporting cast (including Taraji P Henson\, Martin Sheen\, Cedric the Entertainer\, and Lemmons’ husband Vondie Curtis-Hall)\, this overlooked gem offers an engaging glimpse into an important cultural history. \nRuntime: 118 minutes \n  \nLocation: South Street Farm\, 198 South St\, Somerville \nDate: Friday\, July 8 \nTime: Seating opens at 7:30pm\, movie starts at 8pm \nCost: Free admission. Donations to support Groundwork Somerville’s programs are welcome! \nRSVP: As space is limited\, please confirm your attendance by RSVPing on facebook or directly with one of the organizers \nCOVID protocol: Masks are optional\, but encouraged when in close proximity to others. We trust you will not attend if you have any symptoms or recent close contacts.

SUMMARY:Spring Movie Night
DESCRIPTION:Join us for Strictly Brohibited at the South Street Farm: a screening series of cool movies directed by non-male filmmakers. These outdoor events are free and open to the public! \nOur first film celebrates Pride\, with the lesbian spy parody DEBS (2004)\, written and directed by Angela Robinson. Set in a world where a secret test hidden inside the SAT recruits attractive teen girls to become government agents\, the story follows Amy (Sara Foster)\, a “model spy” who gets kidnapped by notorious\, flirty supercriminal Lucy Diamond (Jordana Brewster). Amy’s DEBS team (Meagan Good\, Devon Aoki\, and Jill Ritchie) sets out to rescue her\, but they soon realize she might not be such an unwilling hostage after all. This movie is equal parts silly and sweet\, and we know you’ll love its killer soundtrack\, fantastic supporting cast (Holland Taylor! Jimmi Simpson! Michael Clark Duncan!)\, positive queer message\, and classic early-00s fashion. Runtime: 92 minutes. \nWhen: Seating opens at 7:30pm\, movie starts at 8pm \nCost: Free admission. Donations to support Groundwork Somerville’s programs are welcome! \nRSVP: As space is limited\, we ask that you confirm your attendance on our Facebook event page if you are able. \nCOVID protocol: Masks are optional\, but encouraged when in close proximity to others. We trust you will not attend if you have any symptoms or recent close contacts. \n  \n. \n. \n. \n  \nStrictly Brohibited is a Boston-area screening series and discussion group celebrating the work of non-cis-male filmmakers. We aim to foster a welcoming community for women\, nonbinary\, genderqueer\, and trans movie lovers to talk freely without being interrupted by Film Bros. We hold regular virtual and in-person screenings\, organized through a private Facebook group and Instagram.
