Somerville — Touring Somerville’s future site of MaxPak Square on Monday afternoon, Gov. Deval Patrick announced a $490,000 grant to construct a bike path alongside the 199-unit residential development.
The grant money will extend the Community Path from its terminus at Cedar Street to Lowell Street, where it will link up with a planned Green Line station.
Friends of the Community Path want the state to fund the design and construction of a path leading all the way to Lechmere Station, however the state Department of Transportation had only committed to funding the design, and only until the Inner Belt, a little ways from Lechmere.
The state is seeking a $23 million federal Department of Transportation grant to fund the construction to the Inner Belt as well, said city spokesman Michael Meehan.
Asked whether the state would pick up the funding if the federal government rejected the grant, Patrick was unwaveringly optimistic, if also ambiguous.
“We’re going to do everything we can to make sure the federal government partners with us,” Patrick said.
