Fun For the Whole Family Happening In Somerville

VOLUNTEERS BOIL OVER WITH ENTHUSIASM: Groundwork Somerville is busy getting ready for their big Maple Syrup Boil Down on March 5 (see our

Maple Syrup Boil Down Volunteers Wanted:

We can’t say enough how cool we think it is that, here, in our densely packed city a few folks started making maple syrup from our trees (Take that, Vermont!). On Saturday, March 5 (10 a.m.-2 p.m.) everyone’s invited to “Watch and learn as sap from local trees is boiled down into pure maple syrup over a warm fire,” invites Groundwork Somerville. The free fun includes syrup-tasting, music and kids’ activities at the Somerville Growing Center. Meanwhile, volunteers are needed both Friday and Saturday: Musicians are wanted Friday and Saturday, and volunteers who can help from 8:30 a.m. to noon or 11 a.m.-2:30 p.m. on Friday March 4, the boil down day for area second graders, are needed as well. More info here.

Rock, Paper, Scissors Tournament

So what if you can’t sword fight or dominate the snowboarding half-pipe? Union Square Main Streets challenges all to a battle where everyone can compete: Rock, Paper, Scissors. The showdown takes place tonight at P.A.’s Lounge (7 p.m. registration, 8 p.m. start of battle, $5 cover). Details here.

It’s DARBI Cocktail Hour Night

It may look like a party: people relaxing, chatting and sipping cocktails.  But while monthly Davis Area Resident/Business Initiative (DARBI) Cocktail Hours are fun, their aim is to get people involved in their neighborhood. Business owners and residents of the Davis Square area meet to hobnob while hearing about the latest issues facing the area and ways to help out. Tonight they meet at Orleans (5:30-7:30 p.m.). Details here.

Also, this week, Feb. 21-25, Kickass Cupcakes is hosting Cupcake Decorating Drop-Ins for children. Kids can stop in (with a parent) from 1 to 5 p.m. any day and decorate their own cupcake in the Kickass kitchen. First cupcake is free; additional cupcakes are $3 each. Aprons will be provided.

Have a bargain lunch at Highlander Café

The Highlander Café, run by the High School’s Culinary Program, may well be one of the best insider tips for lunch in town. Eat there and it’s a $6.95 buffet. Take out, and it’s a generous, well-prepared $5.95 meal. Both are available weekly Wed.-Fri. (11:15 a.m.-1:15 p.m.). You get a deal and students get a chance to build marketable skills. Call this a win-win-eat deal. Details here. And see out story here.
