Somerville is the most densely populated city in the Boston area. It has a population of almost 80,000, and only 23% of our land will absorb water. This means that 77% is covered with impervious surfaces, which direct storm water runoff directly into the sewer system.
The purpose of the Depaving Parties is to help Somerville residents build community and help each other to depave their yards, thereby creating a greener, more resilient Somerville.
All residents benefit themselves and the city of Somerville by allowing storm water to infiltrate into the water table, purifying storm water naturally and preventing storm drain overload which floods basements. Some residents want to replace their pavement with vegetable gardens, some want to design rain gardens and some will install interlocking permeable pavement.
Storm water management is a challenge that must be faced by urban areas all around the globe!
Corvid would like to organize a group to work on any one of the projects together. This is a good chance to learn community organizing, event organizing, stormwater management, soil restoration, permeable surface materials (for driveways and patios) and how to construct a rain garden with native plants.
You can get involved by signing up for one or more roles:
* Hands-on work:
   – Use a sledgehammer and pick axe to pry up the asphalt
   – Haul chunks of asphalt in a wheelbarrow to the dumpster
* Bring tasty food
* Supply energizing music
* Help organize an event (There are now 5 events being scheduled)
* Organize publicity
* Organize clean-up
