“Dig Spring!” Garden Clubs Start
March 28, 2011
Groundwork Somerville offers year-round garden-based education to children from kindergarten to eighth grade, in all of the city’s eight public elementary and middle schools, a public charter school, and a public library.
Starting March 28th, students will join us in our “Dig Spring!” Garden Clubs at every elementary school in Somerville. Argenziano and East Somerville Middle Schoolers will be participating in the fist day of “Garden Youth Crew, Jr.” this week as well.
In after-school programs, children learn to plan, plant, tend, and harvest from their own school gardens. They cook with food they have grown. They learn biology, chemistry, math, English, and social studies in a practical, hands-on laboratory. Volunteers assist Lead Garden Educators as they facilitate activities and games with club members. The school gardens have all been built with volunteer labor, and most are located on sites that were previously paved or abandoned.
