Strictly Brohibited at South Street Farm: TALK TO ME

July 8, 2022 @ 8:00 pm - 9:30 pm

It’s Strictly Brohibited at South Street Farm! Join us for a monthly screening series of cool movies written and/or directed by non-men. Free and open to the public!

Our July film is TALK TO ME (2007), directed by Kasi Lemmons. This biopic follows Petey Greene (Don Cheadle), an activist radio DJ who became an influential figure in the 60s and 70s, propelled by his ambitious manager Dewey Hughes (Chiwetel Ejiofor). Written by Hughes’ real-life son Michael Genet and filmmaker Rick Famuyiwa (Brown Sugar, Dope), the film documents Greene’s ascension from prison DJ to high-profile talk show host, and addresses still-relevant topics like racism, poverty, and drug abuse in an environment that was often hostile to Black voices. With compelling lead performances, a killer soul and funk soundtrack, and an impressive supporting cast (including Taraji P Henson, Martin Sheen, Cedric the Entertainer, and Lemmons’ husband Vondie Curtis-Hall), this overlooked gem offers an engaging glimpse into an important cultural history.
