Local Food and Music Festival

Wicked Local Somerville Posted Aug 23, 2010 @ 07:14 AM Somerville —

Groundwork Somerville will hold its annual Local Roots Food and Music Festival benefit Saturday, Sept. 11, from 5 to 10 p.m. at the Community Growing Center at 22 Vinal Ave. Rain date is Sunday, Sept. 12.

The fundraiser helps sustain Groundwork Somerville’s green community efforts such as the Green Team youth jobs program. Local musicians showcasing their talents include Mark Santoro, Dylan Chace, Christian McNeill and the Redeemers, and DJ Marco Andre in his Somerville debut.

Door prizes include locally made syrup, Groundwork Somerville gear, and a grand mystery prize donated by a local business. Local organizations, such as Somerville Local First and the Swapaholics, will showcase their community and sustainability efforts.

Somerville Local First (SLF) will demonstrate the actual impact of buying locally. SLF will have visitors “deposit” the extra $25 that stays in the community from each $100 in local purchases into boxes representing local uses. This exercise will show what impact buying local can have and give individuals the ability to speak about their priorities in the community.

Groundwork Somerville will host activities to get attendees thinking about local impact. Redbones BBQ and Dave’s Fresh Pasta will donate treats, and there will be options for vegetarians.

The suggested donation is $20. For more information, email admin@groundworksomerville.org or call 617-628-9988.
